The world is a better place
This article by Pinker is exactly the sort of stuff I think about whenever I hear somebody talking about how bad things are these days, whether they’re hand-wringingly secular or apocalyptically religious. These aren’t the End of Days or the decline of civilzation. It’s that stupid psycological bias that convinces us that the old days were better, while at the same time wanting to believe we live in a historically unparalleled time (in a bad way).
