An Epidemic of Fear: How Panicked Parents Skipping Shots Endangers Us All

The anti-vaccination crowd is one of the things that make me despair for America. We can all debate things like how to structure our health-care system, or the economy, or wars. But you’d think we wouldn’t even need to debate that giving your child a little shot can prevent diseases that used to be the scourge of our child mortality rates is a good thing. But noooo; diagnosis rates for a condition with an unclear definition jump when it becomes economically advantageous to have that diagnosis (see last week’s This American Life), and people get all up in arms and are scared of needles and find something to blame and don’t care that you can get more mercury from eating fish than you USED TO get and freak out about corporate conspiracy WHEN THERE ARE CHILDREN ALL AROUND THE WORLD THAT NEVER GET THESE VACCINES THEN DIE FROM SOME DINOSAUR LIKE MUMPS

What the hell happened to science education?
